You’d be hard-pressed to find someone in Montana who doesn’t love being outside. And since the Treasure State is world famous for its hiking trails, it’s safe to assume most of us love a good trek through the great outdoors. If you’re up for a bit of a challenge and don’t mind breaking a sweat, give one of these trails in Montana a try this summer.
This 9.8 mile round-trip hiking trail is fully accessible only from July-September, so plan accordingly. Located near East Glacier Park, it’s full of scenic views.
This 5 mile trail is located near Essex, and from May-October hikers can enjoy the beautiful and scenic trek. This is a moderately difficult trail, so if you aren’t in the best shape, just remember to stop and take a breather now and then.
Mount Aeneas is one of the most accessible summits in the state, and assuming you have the time and energy to hike the 5.9 mile loop, you’ll be treated to some stunning views. The peak overlooks Jewel Basin.
This is one of the most popular hikes in the Southern Montana area, but it’s worth exploring. You’ll see waterfalls and breathtaking views and can fish the creek for trout. If you come to the area expecting to camp, head to Hyalite Creek early.
Located near West Yellowstone, the Targhee Creek Trail follows the drainage between Targhee Peak to the west and Bald Peak to the east before joining the Continental Divide trail. It’s 12.4 miles long, but the trail is fairly easy to navigate.
The beautiful Jewel Basin Hiking area is known for its small lakes, alpine meadows, and mini forests. There are many options for hikes here, most of which are moderately challenging.
This is the hike to take when you’d like to get away from it all for a few days. At 26 miles, it can be done in one day by experienced hikers—but to enjoy a more relaxed pace, plan to camp for a night or two. Take one of the dozens of side trails to enjoy some peaceful solitude.
From June-September, this trail is accessible for the more experienced hiker who doesn’t mind a 9.5 mile trek. The views are definitely worth it.
Moose Lake Trail is one of the best options in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The best part about it is that it gives you options—you can head straight to Moose Lake, climb to Tranquil Basin, or head toward the Twenty-five Mile Creek Trail.
This nice, steady climb is about two miles up and two miles down, and the views at the top are incredible. But be aware that this hike is strenuous because of the differences in elevation.
You’ll never forget the beautiful sights on this trail leading to Morrell Lake and Morrell Falls at the base of the Swan Mountain Range.
