Oh, give me a home where the dinosaurs once roamed…yes, I know what you’re thinking: dinosaurs?! That’s right! Once upon a time, the Centennial State was a mecca for dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, and we have footprints and fossils to prove it! One such mystical site where dinosaurs once roamed is that of the Garden Park Fossil Area in Colorado:
Located in Canon City, the Garden Park Fossil Area is an extraordinary site with an equally remarkable history, both prehistoric and semi-modern.
Spanning 3,209 acres, the Garden Park Fossil Area has been the location of many dinosaur bone and fossil discoveries, including the first-ever uncovered remains of a Stegosaurus, Diplodocus, Ceratosaurus, and Camarasaurus.
There are some pretty jaw-dropping light displays in Colorado, but this one may just take the cake: a drive-thru light display 1,000+ feet in the air! That’s right, folks: the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado (AKA the highest suspension bridge in the country!) is hosting its first-ever holiday light display, and you don’t want to miss it!
Taking place November 18th, through December 31st, 2022, the Bridge of Lights invites you to enjoy “thousands of lights, one thousand feet high” in what is arguably the most colorful one-of-a-kind experience in the country.
To make the experience even sweeter, reserve some Elf Munchies (AKA hot cocoa, cider, or coffee in a commemorative cup and a side of cookies!) to enjoy while you drive.
The Bridge of Lights is open November 18th through the 27th (minus Thanksgiving Day), December 1st through the 4th, 8th through the 11th, and 15th through the 31st (minus Christmas Day) from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Anyone who has ever visited Telluride, Colorado will tell you that it’s one of the coolest, most charming, and most beautiful towns in the state. It’s certainly one of my personal favorites.
One of the MANY great things about Colorado is our many railroads and trains that are open to the public and boast incredible views of the state. For one of these memorable rides that run year-round, we highly recommend climbing aboard Colorado’s one and only Royal Gorge Route Railroad:
Based out of Canon City, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad is a year-round, 2-hour train ride that runs through the iconic Royal Gorge via a section of the former Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad.
“When we set out to resurrect the Royal Gorge Route Railroad line through Colorado’s grandest canyon, our vision was to offer far more than the traditional tourism experience,” shares the Railroad, which they have managed to do time and again since their launch in 1998.
Colorado is a seemingly beautiful and pleasant place to be, thanks to our good people, innovative attractions, and, of course, our famous landscape. Behind all of this perfection, however, there are plenty of haunts and morbidities, including this abandoned Colorado railroad that may just be one of the most haunted places on earth:
Welcome to the historical and downright creepy Phantom Canyon Road.
Located near Florence, the Phantom Canyon Road is situated just off the Gold Belt Tour byway between Cripple Creek and Florence and runs along an old railroad route.
There’s nothing quite like going on a road trip at the peak of the summer. In Colorado, that usually means a trip to the mountains, and one of the best places that you can go on a summer drive is Twin Lakes. Twin Lakes, Colorado, is a pair of lakes in the center of the state, and it’s also a small, historic town named after them. You’ll love visiting these picturesque lakes and marveling at the tall mountains that surround them – including Mount Elbert, our state’s tallest – and you’ll enjoy checking out the small town on their shores that has a population of less than 200 people.
Twin Lakes is a lovely little town to spend time in on a summer day.
The actual Twin Lakes are two glacier-carved lakes in this area. They were dredged to be made larger, and they serve as reservoirs to store water for the Front Range. Both the east and west lakes are popular for recreation.
If you are a train enthusiast, then boy oh boy will you find some of the best day trips in Colorado… locomotives included! More than just an Amtrak day trip, there are so many awesome and exciting railroads that offer up fun day trips with interesting themes. If you want a dining train, we’ve got it, if you’re a history buff, no worries, the Centennial State has got your back. Ready to begin your locomotive adventures through Colorado? Then hop aboard one of these trains for a superb train trip near me in Colorado.

Do you like history? Do you ever like to pretend that you are living in the past? One great way to do that and really feel it is by visiting and staying in historic properties – especially historic hotels. The Delaware Hotel is an iconic hotel in Leadville, Colorado, that will make you feel like you’re stepping back in time 100 years ago or more. It was built by three brothers from Delaware – William, George, and John Callaway – who came to Leadville to make their fortune as merchants as gold seekers flocked to the area. Did they imagine that their hotel would still be hosting guests in the 21st century? Hard to say – but it does! Read on to learn more about this historic hotel.
The Delaware Hotel is a beautiful building. At the time it was built, the population of Leadville was close to 25,000. Today, the population is just 2,600 – but the Delaware Hotel still stands.
It’s right on the main strip in Leadville and right in the center of town. You’ll find it on the corner of Harrison Avenue and East 7th Street. Imagine all the things it has seen over the years!
No matter your whereabouts in Colorado, you are guaranteed to find breathtaking scenery, which includes the Eastern Plains, Western Slope, SoCo, and mountains. Did you notice that we left out an essential and beautiful part of the state? Don’t worry, Northern Colorado, we did not forget you and want to highlight your beauty today, which we think is best enjoyed via the little-known North Colorado Loop Tour:
Spanning the northcentral part of the Centennial State, the North Colorado Loop Tour is billed as being “The Colorado You Imagined,” thanks to several unique byways and stretches, including Prairie to Peak.
Beginning in Greeley, the Prairie to Peak portion of the North Colorado Loop Tour takes drivers on a journey that varies from 35 to 160 miles and includes a first stop at the Cache la Poudre National Heritage Area in Fort Collins.
