Glacier National Park is full of famous landmarks. Between the iconic Lake McDonald and the legendary Going-to-the-Sun Road, the park is home to some of the most recognizable spots in the state. But unless you’ve explored our state to its fullest, you may not realize that some of the most beautiful places in Montana are actually hidden away from the crowds! Even when it comes to the spectacular and much-loved GNP. Few Montanans and even fewer visitors are aware of the Ptarmigan Tunnel in Glacier National Park… but this is one tucked-away hidden gem you won’t want to miss.
The 240-foot Ptarmigan Tunnel was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s for horses and some early park tours.
The Ptarmigan Tunnel Trail starts near the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn. Park your car in the designated lot and you’ll find the nearby trailhead, which veers right just beyond the Iceberg Lake trailhead.
Eventually you’ll reach the Ptarmigan Trail junction, where you should turn left.
Take in the incredible sweeping mountain views as you head toward the tunnel.
The Ptarmigan Tunnel is open from early July until the beginning of October when the trail closes for the winter. It’s one of the few tunnels in Montana still standing and open to the public.
The hike to the tunnel isn’t easy, and only experienced hikers should attempt it. That being said, if you’re just getting started now, this is a great goal for next summer.
Had you ever heard of the Ptarmigan Tunnel? It’s just one of many reasons to fall in love with GNP! Of course, it should go without saying that this piece of history is a true treasure that we want to keep clean and safe for years to come – pack it in, pack it out!
