Oregon is known for its amazing landscape; dense green forests, majestic waterfalls, shimmering coasts and colorful deserts. Not only is Oregon stunningly beautiful, its scenery is some of the most wondrous in the world. For instance, did you know that we have the largest sea lion cave in the country? We also have the largest living organism in the world, and some of the tallest mountains, highest waterfalls and deepest lakes around. Here are 10 of the most incredible natural wonders in Oregon:
Crater Lake is one of Oregon’s many natural wonders. Situated in the crater of a dormant volcano, the lake is the 8th deepest in the world, and the water is incredibly blue because it has some of the purest water in the world.
Just beneath the surface of the Malheur National Forest in eastern Oregon is the largest living organism in the world; a honey mushroom that spans 2,200 acres.
The Painted Hills are an amazing sight to behold. The colorful hills are located at the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, located in Wheeler County.
Did you know that Oregon is home to the largest sea lion cave in the U.S.? The Sea Lion Caves are part of a wildlife preserve near Florence.
Haystack Rock is an incredible 235 ft rock on Canon Beach, and is one of Oregon’s great landmarks.
Mt. Hood is an enormous and stunningly beautiful volcano. It’s the tallest mountain in Oregon, and one of the tallest in the country.
We recently did a feature about this mysterious natural well on the coast, but it wouldn’t be right to leave it out of this list. Thor’s Well is a hole in the coastal shore at Cape Perpetua, and it drains ocean water and periodically shoots it back out like a fountain.
Sometimes referred to as the “Alps of Oregon”, this mountain range in northeast Oregon is stunningly beautiful.
Of all the amazing waterfalls in Oregon, Multnomah Falls is the tallest in the state, and the second tallest year-round waterfall in the country. Not to mention, it’s totally majestic.
The amazingly beautiful Smith Rock State Park is located in the central Oregon desert and is known for its stunning cliffs and climbing opportunities.
