Waiting for you at the end of the Pioneer Cabin Trail is a lovely little mountain cabin that was built in the 1930s. Along the way, you’ll enjoy tremendous views of the Sawtooth Wilderness and Pioneer Mountains, so lace up those hiking boots and prepare for a truly stunning adventure.
Despite its difficulty, the trail to Pioneer Cabin is a popular day hike in the area. The 8-mile out-and-back trail will lead you through more than 20 switchbacks as you climb up a ridge to reach the cabin, but don’t worry—the final destination is worth it!
To get to the trailhead, drive northeast from Ketchum on Trail Creek Road all the way to Corral Creek Road #137. Turn right on Coral Creek and stay on the dirt road for four miles until you reach the trailhead.
You’ll climb approximately 2,500-feet over 3.6 miles on the Pioneer Cabin Trail, but don’t let that scare you away. The scenery that can be viewed along the trail guarantees you’ll be rewarded every step of the way. Many hikers opt to take it nice and slow to fully enjoy the views.
Additionally, you’ll be treated to all types of terrain ranging from high alpine meadows to densely forested areas. There’s something for every adventurer on this trail, including towering mountain peaks and babbling streams. This is Idaho wilderness at its best.

The sight of this backcountry cabin surrounded by mountains is a real treat. Built by the Sun Valley Company in 1938, it was constructed to make skiing in the Pioneer Mountains more accessible. It was modeled after the alpine huts that were popular in Europe at the time.
Take your time and be sure to hang out at the cabin for a bit. You’ve earned it! The trail to Pioneer Cabin is definitely a workout, but it’s one you’ll find yourself wanting to do again and again.
